Piney Woods Cabin

This East Texas log cabin was built by my Grandfather and Great Uncle back in the 30’s.

It was a simple little cabin with a barn for the cows, a chicken house and a huge vegetable garden. Daily chores were not full of drudgery. My Aunt could make anything fun - from collecting eggs to snapping peas out on the back porch. When I was little, I used to sit on the back of the cows while my Great Aunt milked them.

There were many things there in the country that a little city girl found interesting. On the back porch was a wringer washing machine and we would hang the clothes out in the sun to dry. On the side porch sat an old butter churn that when my mother was a girl, had shot a hole in when she got her shotgun. In the bedroom was an old and working treadle sewing machine. There was even an out house at one time. I remember when my Aunt called for us to come up and try out her new indoor plumbing, lol.

Days were filled with laughter, visiting relatives and friends. Meals were cooked from scratch and nothing tasted as good as her biscuits. They had a little dog that would dance for treats in the evening. At night I would slip into a feather bed and listen to the crickets outside. It was grand fun just being there.

My Great Aunt and Uncle never had any children, so when my Uncle died, the cabin was sold and has since fallen into disrepair.
