One of my favorite songs is “Travelin Texas” by Shake Russell.

Travelin’ Texas, been ride’n for days
Travelin’ Texas, is an old cowboy’s dream…

Shake does such a good job of describing the Lone Star State. I have been humming it today and it got me to thinking of songs about Texas.

Our state is so big and there are so many cool things and places to write about. It’s no wonder that there are a lot of Texas songs.

Here is my short list of Texas songs:

* Amarillo by Morning

* Ding Dong Daddy from Dumas - lol, my MIL from Borger taught me that one a long time ago

* I’m an Old Cowhand from the Rio Grande

* Streets of Laredo - this and the one below are my DH favorites

* El Paso City by the Rio Grande

* Galveston - one of my favorites

* Luckenbach Texas with Waylon, Willie and the Boys

What are your favorite Texas songs?

  • You’ve named many of my favorite songs already but there’s a couple more that I like a lot

Alabama - If You’re Gonna Play In Texas (You Gotta Have A Fiddle In The Band)

Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers - Houston

“Houston, Houston means that I’m one day closer to you ….”

My all time favorite song though is kind of about Texas without being about Texas - it is a Texas artist though!

On The Road Again by Willie Nelson

I love Willie Nelson’s singing but this is my very favorite song :) … and it says TEXAS to me!

This song always has too - I’m one of those “I wasn’t born in Texas but got here as quick as I could” people - every time I hear Willie sing this song, I remember why I came to Texas from somewhere else and why I am still here!

  • Texas River Song - Townes Van Zandt

The first part goes like this:

    We crossed the wild pecos
    We forded the nueces
    We swum the guadalupe
    And we followed the brazos
    Red river runs rusty
    The wichita clear
    But down by the brazos
    I courted my dear

You can easily google and find the full lyrics. Townes Van Zandt was such a talent. Sorry he is gone.

  • Here are a few others:

T for Texas - Jimmy Rodgers
All My Exes Live in Texas -
    Texas Honey - Gene Kelton
All Alone in Texas - The Guzzlers
I Saw Miles and Miles of Texas - Asleep at the Wheel?
    Half My Heart’s in Texas
New San Antonio Rose - Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys
Texas Flood - Stevie Ray Vaughan

I’m working on a good list we can use for the World Hang Gliding Championships in Big Spring. It’s in August ‘07, but a lot of the international competitors will be here for the Pre-Worlds this August. We want to give them a real sense of local flavor!

  • My favorite Texas song is “Dusty Skies” by Bob Wills. He knew the depression and dust storms like many of us who lived thru them.
