Memorial Day weekend is coming up and many Texans will be having a barbecue. All over the Lone Star State we will be firing up the grill. Yep, here in Texas we love our barbecue.

My mother was a Texan through and through. For a time we lived in California and I guess she was going through barbecue withdrawal. I can clearly remember, more than once, her spotting a BBQ stand on the side of the road and making my father turn around so she could get some. lol

To some, BBQ is serious business. And now there is even a movie about it called Barbecue: A Texas Love Story. It is a fun journey through the Lone Star State to visit BBQ cook-offs, the Salty Dawg cookers at the Mosquito Festival, a church that raises money from the sale of their “Holy BBQ” and more.

The film is narrated by Ann Richards and features commentary by famous Texans such as Dan Rather, Kinky Friedman, Liz Carpenter (chief of staff to President Johnson) and Cactus Pryor (Austin radio host). But the real stars of the movie are people of Texas who shared a laugh and a meal.

From small towns to family reunions, roadside BBQ pits to restaurants, cook offs and festivals - one thing is sure, all over Texas we are cooking and eating barbecue!

  • I love BBQ as long as I don’t have to do it on a BBQ pit … LOL … I cook my brisket in the oven with BBQ sauce. People tell me that “real” BBQ has to be cooked on a BBQ pit in the back yard - I think to myself “HAH!” (I think mine is excellent!)

My son-in-law uses his gas grill all the time - I think it leaves a certain very mild “petrol” after-taste flavor in the food - so that is not for me and I charcoal lighter fluid - I can use an entire can trying to get just a few little charcoals to light up - that definitely gives it a petrol flavor - my electric oven with BBQ sauce works great & there is no “gasoline” flavoring!

Out here in Katy, there is a great BBQ place though that uses … charcoal & wood chips maybe? … anyway, the BBQ is awesome!

http://www.midwaydeerprocessing.com/ - it is a grocery store & deer processing & Bar-B-Que - one of the neat things about small towns … they can combine all sorts of interesting things together into one business! Stop in for a great plate of their brisket or sausage etc next time you visit the Katy area. I discovered it while working in a mfg plant close to there - it was a favorite place to get lunch for me for the year I worked in Katy.

    The Texas Shop

For all its enormous range of space, climate, and physical appearance, and for all the internal squabbles, contentions, and strivings, Texas has a tight cohesiveness perhaps stronger than any other section of America. Rich, poor, Panhandle, Gulf, city, country, Texas is the obsession, the proper study and the passionate possession of all Texans. - John Steinbeck
